Apple, MacForce, and the World Trade Center, How do they Rank? So Where’s the Coffee?

As the representative from LIMUG, I attended the Snow Leopard Server <a href="http://www.searchengineoptimizationportland.com/sem/"target="_blank"rel="external"title="Search Engine Marketing" >seminar yesterday at the World Trade Center in Portland Oregon.

After attending the Snow Leopard Server tour yesterday I decided I would go ahead and grade their presentation.

The World Trade Center is a very nice venue. Of course I had to park at the wrong end making my walk is far as possible. The event was held in a real nice auditorium with great lighting and seating. Checking in could have been any easier.

MacForce had a single table with the sign up to win a free iPod. They were totally unobtrusive and basically put on a nice event.

Presenters from Apple were very knowledgeable. The format of giving us the information and then presenting a demo of what they presented was interesting. After while this format seemed to create a sense of confusion or just dizziness.
(Post from Search Engine Optimizician.)
During the break we were presented with a real nice selection of cookies, extremely large though they were. A selection of canned sugar in the form of soda pops or fake sugar in the same form. There was also ice water available in glass glasses. But nowhere to be found was coffee. You heard me right there was no coffee. We have a room full of computer geeks, it’s after three clock in the afternoon, and there’s no coffee to be found anywhere on site during the break.

Apparently MacForce and Apple decided that the only caffeine to be consumed during the break was going to be in carbonated form. Needless to say this caffeine addict would’ve really appreciated a nice hot cup of coffee during the break.

So here are my grades:

Venue – <strike>“A”</strike> “B-”

Apple Presentation – “B”

MacForce Presence – “B”

Break – “D-”

Choice of Beverages – “F”

Over All Grade – “C-”

Maybe next time they will have COFFEE!

For details on the information presented at the tour visit

An Afternoon at the World Trade Center in Portland with Apple Snow Leopard Server

Tomorrow as part of my duties as the founder of LIMUG I will be attending the Apple Snow Leopard server tour held at the World Trade Center Auditorium in Portland Oregon.

LIMUG is the LinkedIn Mac users group with 11,000 members. Be sure to check out the LIMUG website. (Cool logo eh?)

The Apple Snow Leopard <a href="http://www.searchengineoptimizationportland.com/sem/"target="_blank"rel="external"title="Search Engine Marketing" >seminar is going to cover hardware, software, setup, administration, and integration. It also covers podcast producer to, scripting for system administrators, and the iPhone integration.

The Apple iPhone integration being covered at this seminar is really interesting. There is absolutely no mention of Apple’s new iPad in their entire agenda. I do find it interesting that they do mention the iPod touch to which the new Apple iPad is being referred to as just a larger version. They do plan on discussing how the new Apple Snow Leopard Server can assist with automatically configuring these mobile devices and using that services such as mail, calendar, contacts, and remote access.
(Post from Search Engine Optimizician.)
With the advent of the smart phones it makes our jobs as Internet marketers more extensive and we have to consider mobile devices accessing the Internet. I’m attending this event with the hope of picking up some tidbits of information that might not only further my Apple knowledge but also my Internet marketing knowledge.

This event is actually sponsored by <a href="http://apple.com" target-"_blank class="extlink">Apple Inc. and <a href="http://macforce.com/" target-"_blank" class="extlink">MacForce one of our local Macintosh suppliers in Portland.

What Platform is Your Web Site Running On?

As the search engine optimizician I have to deal with Microsoft servers quite often. Even though windows is the most popular operating system for computers, windows servers are not the predominant server used for the world wide web.

I personally like to work with Linux servers. The Linux platform is easier to use. You can create 301 and 302 redirects as well as solving your canonical issues with the addition of a .htaccess file.

A redirect can be accomplished on a Microsoft IIS server by:

In internet services manager, right click on the file or folder you wish to redirect

Select the radio titled “a redirection to a URL”.

Enter the redirection page

Check “The exact URL entered above” and the “A permanent redirection for this resource”

Click on “Apply”

You just have to jump through more hoops when you want to do anything on a windows server. Do you know if your site hosted on a Linux or a Windows server?

What Operating System are Your Home and Work Computers Running?

I am actually using three operating systems in my home and work computers. I use Windows XP, Mac OS X, and a few flavors of Linux on my home and work machines. I basically use Mac for every day use, Windows and Linux to check the rendering of sites I have been working on. I also use the Microsoft platform to run certain applications that haven’t been ported to the Apple platform yet.

The Microsoft Windows platform has it’s own set of problems, not the least of which is the long ……………….. long start up time. I usually try to turn on that machine early and let it run through all its stuff while I am getting work done on my Mac. What operating system(s) are you running on your computers?

Worm Infects Millions of Microsoft Computers

In recent weeks a worm, a malicious software program, has swept through corporate, educational and public computer networks around the world. Known as Conficker or Downadup, it is spread by a recently discovered Microsoft Windows vulnerability, by guessing network passwords and by hand-carried consumer gadgets like USB keys.

Experts say it is the worst infection since the Slammer worm exploded through the Internet in January 2003, and it may have infected as many as nine million personal computers around the world…

Microsoft rushed an emergency patch to defend the Windows operating systems against this vulnerability in October, yet the worm has continued to spread even as the level of warnings has grown in recent weeks. Read more…

Enough said, you now have my operating system preferences let me here about yours.

I have met Steve Wozniak in person before and actually shook his hand. I think The Woz is an incredible person and a great educator.

I ran across this video where the BBC actually sat The Woz down in front of a camera and filmed this interview titled Steve Wozniak: How it began. I thought you might enjoy it.

Because I was unable to over come the auto play feature you can watch the
video by clicking on this link and closing the window when you are finished.

Steve “The Woz” Wozniak co-founded Apple Computer with Steve Jobs. In this video he remembers how it all began from the Computer History Museum in Silicon Valley, California.

Here’s the deal. All the Search Engine Land editors had a meeting at SMX West, as Barry’s blogged. I sat down and flipped open my trusty Toshiba Windows XP machine, which I’ve had to go back to while my super-wonderful Sony Vista laptop goes back for repairs. I was the only one without a Mac. Sigh. I knew I’d been beaten.

Plus, the new Macbooks had come out. So I now own a MacBook Pro, 15″ screen, 2.4 GHz. I bought VMWare so that I can get Windows XP running on it, as my security blanket. And I was mean and rude to the Mac employee who sold it to me, complaining I should be able to just buy Mac software for my Intel computers and what, Steve Jobs doesn’t have enough money that he has to resist that.

Danny Sullivan and an Apple computer the next thing you know he will be moving from the UK to the US.
What Danny is moving to California?

After 12 years of living in the UK, I’m going home — back to Southern California, back to Newport Beach.

The next thing you know Danny will be attending <a href="http://www.searchengineoptimizationportland.com/sem/"target="_blank"rel="external"title="Search Engine Marketing" >SEMpdx SearchFest ’09.

At the risk of enraging the Apple bashers, I can’t keep my mouth shut any longer: Something is going on with the Macintosh.

A Quote by David Pogue:

At the risk of enraging the Apple bashers, I can’t keep my mouth shut any longer: Something is going on with the Macintosh.

At this week’s Macworld Expo, there were 475 exhibitors. That’s 100 more booths than last year.

There were 50,000 attendees. That’s 10,000 more people than last year.

A book publisher told me that 2007 Macintosh book sales were up by double-digit leaps over the previous year.

Gartner’s fourth-quarter 2007 research shows that Mac shipments grew 28 percent over the year before, giving it an 6.1 percent market share. (It was 3-point-something only a couple of years ago.)

According to Net Applications, use of the Mac’s Web browser, Safari, climbed 32 percent in 2007.

Apple sold 2.16 million Macs in the last quarter–a new company record.

And anecdotally—well, you probably know somebody who’s switched to the Mac recently.

David goes on to dismiss the iPod “halo effect” and people being fed up with viruses and spyware on Windows.

He lays the blame right in the lap of Windoz <strike>Longhorn</strike> <strike>OSX</strike> I mean Vista. Quoting a source as saying “Well, if I have to buy a new machine and learn a new interface, I may as well get the cool-looking, virus-free one.”

This is a very possible explanation of Apple’s gigantic 35 percent leap in just 12 months.

Sounds very plausible to me. I’m on board.

Do you have a better theory?

The new iPhone from Apple has been all over the news, net, and television lately.

Steven Colbert even pretended he had one when he talked into his hand on a recent Colbert Report.

Do you remember the classic Frog in a Blender 2000 by Joe Cartoon? If you haven’t seen it you have to check it out.

Just when you thought you’d seen it all with the iPhone smashing, here comes Blendtec fresh from YouTube. Blendtec asks viewers “See what the Total Blender can do in the Blendtec test lab, as we ask the question, Will It Blend?” Now the iPhone is the star of the blender lab test.

Be sure to stay tuned for the slow motion replay.

1986 Mac Plus Vs. 2007 AMD Dual-Core.

Old Mac vs. New PeeCee!

I ran across this on the internet and had to share it with you.

It pits an old Mac Plus running System 6.0.8 against a New PeeCee running Windoz XP and <strike>Longhorn</strike> <strike>Windoz OSX</strike> Vista.

You Won’t Believe Who Wins!

The Most Outlandish Computer Comparison Ever!

Bloat. If you think that Americans are getting fatter, take one good look at the operating system (OS) your computer is running right now. It gets larger and more weighed down with every update. We are in the third decade of global personal computing, and have we really progressed that far?

The Comparison

The generally recommended configuration for a Mac Plus is System 6.0.8. This is an OS that needs a legitimate minimum of 1 megabyte of RAM to be able to multitask, connect to a network, print, display WYSIWYG in millions of colours (on modular Macs), as well as run a reasonable GUI. Those are functions that usually require at least 500 times more memory under Windows XP and 1,000 times more memory under Windows Vista.

When we look at OS hard disk requirements, we find similar discrepancies. System 6.0.8 requires 1MB, Windows XP requires 1.5GB and Windows Vista 15GB. Yes, Vista needs 15,000 times the hard disk space as System 6.0.8. In simple text format, you can write 175,000 words in one megabyte which is the size of System 6.0.8. That works out to about two full-length novels. Windows Vista demands enough real estate on your hard drive that you could easily fit 30,000 full-length novels into it.

System 6.0.8 is not only a lot more compact since it has far fewer (mostly useless) features and therefore less code to process, but also because it was written in as<a href="http://www.searchengineoptimizationportland.com/sem/"target="_blank"rel="external"title="Search Engine Marketing" >sembly code instead of the higher level language C. The lower the level of the code language, the less processing cycles are required to get something done.

The Mac Plus has a Motorola 68000 CPU running at 8MHz. The AMD has an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ with two cores, each running at 2.4GHz. In absolute computing power exclusively measured in processor speed, AMD’s combined 4.8GHz is 600 times faster than the Motorola. However, the AMD is a far more advanced processor, thus performs in conventional benchmarks much faster than the old 68000 per Mhz. So it’s very safe to say that the AMD is at least 1,000 times faster than the Mac Plus.

We decided to splurge and fit the maximum possible 4MB RAM into the old Plus. After all it was going up against AMD with its 2x512MB RAM for a total of 1,024MB or 1GB. That’s about 250 times more memory than the Mac.

The Mac was fitted with an external SCSI 40MB Hard Drive. The AMD had an internal IDE 120GB Hard Drive with a 3,000 times greater data capacity. Both drives were under 10% filled.

Conclusion

Check out the results! For the functions that people use most often, the 1986 vintage Mac Plus beats the 2007 AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+: 9 tests to 8! Out of the 17 tests, the antique Mac won 53% of the time! Including a jaw-dropping 52 second whipping of the AMD from the time the Power button is pushed to the time the Desktop is up and useable.

We also didn’t want to overly embarrass the AMD by comparing the time it takes to install the OS vs. the old Mac. The Mac’s average of about a minute is dwarfed by the approximately one hour install time of Windows XP Pro.

Is this to say that the Mac Plus is a better computer than the AMD? Of course not. The technological advancements of 21 years have placed modern PCs in a completely different league of varied capacities. But the “User Experience” has not changed much in two decades. Due to bloated code that has to incorporate hundreds of functions that average users don’t even know exist, let alone ever utilize, the software companies have weighed down our PCs to effectively neutralize their vast speed advantages. When we compare strictly common, everyday, basic user tasks between the Mac Plus and the AMD we find remarkable similarities in overall speed, thus it can be stated that for the majority of simple office uses, the massive advances in technology in the past two decades have brought zero advance in productivity.

No one expected fists to fly when Micro$oft chairman Bill Gates and Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs appeared on stage together this week. But it’s clear there’s no love lost between Apple and M$.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and Apple CEO Steve Jobs took the stage Wednesday night, May 30th at The Wall Street Journal’s D: All Things Digital conference.

Jobs and Gates at times seemed to be overcome about their history together. Indeed, by the end, both men seemed choked up by the emotion of the moment.

Even after being praised for his recent philanthropic efforts, Gates talked more about what he did in the technology industry than what his charitable foundation is doing now.

“The most important work I got a chance to be involved in – no matter what I do – is the personal computer,” Gates said. “That’s my life’s work.”

Of course this appearance wasn’t all “lovey dovey”. At one point Jobs tried to convince Gates that Apple isn’t trying to be mean by poking fun at the “PC guy,” the lovable loser who stands in sharp contrast to Apple’s cool “Mac guy” in the popular series of commercials.

Gates in an interview with Newsweek earlier this year, he’d even questioned the ads’ veracity.

“I’d give a lot to have Steve’s taste – in terms of intuitive taste for people and products,” he said. “The way he does things, it’s just different. It’s magical.”

Similarly, Jobs said that Apple could have learned a lot from Microsoft’s penchant for partnering with other companies in the industry. Partnering simply wasn’t in Apple’s DNA, and the company didn’t learn how to do it until decades after its founding, he said.

“The funny thing is Microsoft’s one of the few companies we were able to partner with (where) that actually worked for both companies,” he said.

The event was the first time Jobs and Gates have made a joint public appearance since the 1997 Boston at Macworld, when Gates joined Jobs via teleconference to announce a landmark deal between their two companies. The previous time the two appeared together at a public event was in the early 1980s.

Jobs is well known for taking pot-shots at his company’s bigger rival. And he didn’t disappoint on Wednesday. The company’s iTunes software is one of the most popular programs on computers running Micro$oft’s Windoz operating system, Jobs noted in his conversation earlier in the day with Mossberg. Indeed, he said, some users have written to tell Apple that iTunes is their favorite Windoz application.

As more and more M$ PeeCee users begin to use Mac they will be looking for the stuff they had to do with their old computers.

I ran across this interesting TOP 10 list today and I thought you might be interested in checking it out.

If you’re reading this list, you probably know that the Mac is one of the best machines around when it comes to keeping you secure on the Internet. But it’s also been receiving more scrutiny from the press and security professionals recently, and no machine is 100% safe. As the Mac becomes more popular, and as more services become Internet-based and cross-platform, so do the associated risks.

You can help keep not only your Macintosh, but also the Macintosh community as whole secure on the Internet by taking a few simple steps beyond those many significant ones that Apple has built into Mac OS X. Here’s our "top 10" list. We welcome any additions or alternatives you might have.

Physical security first. Although not strictly an Internet security issue, the odds of something bad happening to your Mac due to a physical problem are much higher than something happening to it over the Internet. So take precautions appropriate to your situation, such as physical lock-down cables, surge protectors and proper care of data on portable machines (such as encryption of any important files). And be sure to keep good, up-to-date local and remote backups.

"The only constant is change." Especially on the Internet. New security threats are discovered, temporary fixes and updates are issued, mistakes are sometimes made. It’s important to keep up as best you can:

Subscribe to Apple’s Software Update and install security fixes soon after they’re available, although not necessary immediately

Utilize online (for instance our blog isfym.com) and offline (for instance users’ groups) sources to keep up with new security issues, implement temporary protection as needed, and make sure updates appear good.

Keep up on updates for any other popular applications you use, especially cross-platform ones like Microsoft products and security applications like your firewall and anti-virus applications.

And of course stay knowledgeable about everything you can.

Use a personal firewall. You need a personal firewall on each of your machines, and the one Apple includes in Mac OS X is only sufficient for keeping you safe until you can get a better one. Be sure your firewall has logging fully enabled, and use a log analysis application to highlight issues that need to be addressed. And, no, the so-called firewall in any router you may have isn’t good enough either (although it does help).

Use good passwords. Until the day we log into everything through retinal scans or other "biometric" means, passwords will be the main way we identify ourselves to Internet-based services. Use passwords appropriate to the importance of the service they’re protecting, choosing longer, harder to guess (and more unique) passwords for the more critical services. Apple’s password assistant, built into Keychain Access, can be a big help here.

Do not send confidential information by email, unless you know how to use encrypted email. Also treat all email messages received, even from people you know, as suspect. Same applies to IM (with certain exceptions like encrypted iChat). On the Web, be sure the Web page is a secure one (look for the lock icon) before entering confidential information.

Never open attachments in email messages, which are more often than not viruses. This advise may seem a bit over the top, but you should apply it as the general rule, with the only real exception being when you know the person who sent you the attachment and the context from the rest of the email makes it clear that that person really did intend to send you that attachment.

Never click on links sent in email messages. Again this is the general rule, with similar exceptions as with email attachments. These links are often to "phishing" Web sites that will attempt to steal personal information from you, or to "maliciously-crafted" Web sites that will attempt to do even worse things, like take over your machine (yes, even if you do use a Mac). Always type URLs directly into your Web browser, use known-good bookmarks, or click on links from reputable sites (including search engines) that you’ve gotten to through one of these methods.

Consider an anti-virus application. There are essentially no known Mac-specific viruses, and use of anti-virus applications can help keep it that way. Right now, anti-virus applications are essentially insurance policies, which you hope to never need to use, but are glad you have if you do. Also like insurance, you need to be sure to keep your anti-virus application, and its associated virus definitions, up to date.

If at all possible, do not provide any services from your Macintosh. In other words, all services in the Sharing pane of System Preferences should be off, along with other services like iTunes music sharing and iPhoto photo sharing. If you do need to offer services, use your personal firewall to restrict access to as few machines as possible (preferably just machines on your local network). And of course use good passwords for those services, in particular for the cross-platform Remote Login (ssh) service, which is often subject to dictionary attack.

Properly secure your wireless (AirPort) environment, both at home and on the road. At home the most important things are to change your wireless router’s password and to use WPA encryption. Beyond that, don’t allow your router to be administered over the Internet and add other security measures (like creating a closed network and limiting access by ID) if you feel comfortable configuring them. On the road, be sure to turn off or block any services your Mac is providing through your firewall, be cognizant of who’s looking over your shoulder, use a VPN if you’re talking back to your home or work network and watch our for rogue access points

While I don’t actually buy in on all this paranoia, I do feel that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
I believe in being prepared. I have found, by experience, that if I prepare well I will never need it. A worth while trade in my book.

The DoorStop X Security Suite costs less than $50. No I don’t own it yet, but there is a free evaluation download.

Mac OS X has iPhoto and it works OK for basic editing of photos. I am not very happy with the way it handles saving the photos for use on the web.

I have been looking for an easy to use inexpensive graphic program for my clients to do basic photo editing and produce good looking images small enough to use on the web. I have played around with this program a little bit and it seems to work quite well. The results are quite acceptable. Seashore just might be the answer.

I heard about Seashore this morning in an email from Mug InfoManager. Seashore is an open source image editor for Mac OS X.

Seashore’s features include gradients, textures and anti-aliasing for both text and brush strokes. It also supports multiple layers and alpha channel editing. It uses the same native file format as GIMP.

Seashore is for basic image editing needs of most computer users. It is not intended to provide a replacement for professional image editing products like Photoshop.

Seashore was created by Mark Pazolli with the help of a handful of other developers and helpful users, he still develops it to this day.

Seashore’s features include:

Full support for the GIMP’s native XCF file format

Read and write support for the TIFF, PNG, JPEG, JP2000 and GIF file formats

Read-only support for the BMP, PICT, PDF and XBM file formats

Layers with over 20 merging effects

Ability to edit just the primary or alpha channels

Thorough transparency effects including <a href="http://www.searchengineoptimizationportland.com/sem/"target="_blank"rel="external"title="Search Engine Marketing" >semi-transparent gradients

Arbitrary selection regions

Anti-aliased brush strokes

6 basic gradient effects with 16 variations

Tablet support

ColorSync support (including embedded profiles in TIFFs and CMYK previewing)

Plug-in filters

Most features work on Mac OS 10.3 and later, with the exception of JP2000 support for which Mac OS 10.4 is required.

Seashore is an open source program so you can count on the development being continued. It is suggested you use Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later.

Last Saturday, I spent the day at camp–MacCamp, to be precise. For the last 20-plus years, the Portland Macintosh Users Group (PMUG) has held these twice-yearly escapes for Mac devotees. Held at the very scenic Silver Falls State Park, MacCamp offers Mac users a three-day-long Mac-focused retreat from urban life. PMUG reserves four lodges (cabins) at the conference center within the park, accommodating up to 56 “campers,” though this isn’t camping in any traditional sense. The cabins contain most of the comforts of home, with the exception of an Internet connection. PMUG charges just enough to cover its costs, and doesn’t turn a profit on the event… What a great atmosphere for a meeting between fellow Mac users. Congrats, PMUG, on yet another successful MacCamp hopefully I’ll be back for the full experience next spring.

Once again it looks as though MacCamp is a success. If you enjoy Macintosh computers and the company of other Mac users maybe you should join the Portland Macintosh Users Group next time around.

This move is expected to expose Mac computers to more of the consumers who would not visit Apple specific stores.

Looks like a win win for both Apple and Best Buy to me! See you at Best Buy, in the Apple department of course.

Webmasters, if you are planning on using the advanced query searches at Live search don’t bother. It is not just broken it has been shut down. According to a blog entry from Eytan Seidman the lead program manager at Live Search. It was shut down because of too many automated queries.

For those of you who use some of the advanced query syntax in our search engine such as link:, linkdomain: and inurl:, you may have noticed that this functionality has been recently turned off…mass automated usage for data mining. So for now, we have made the tough call to block all queries with these operators…get this back online as soon as possible … Keep an eye on our blog for updates.

MSN once again lives up to its reputation. I was starting to use Live Search more and more and even enjoying it. Oh well, Once again Google and Yahoo! leaves MSN in the dust. Now all I have to do is keep going to the Live Search Weblog to find out if I can use all their search engines features. Man they are really pushing Longhorn (excuse me I mean Vista) there. I guess they had better. Once Leopard is released, M$ <strike>OS X</strike> <strike>Longhorn</strike> Vista will loose its luster.

Pennsylvania university pulls PC plug, goes all-Mac

According to an article in ComputerWorld, Wilkes University announced March 14th that they will be dumping PeeCees if favor of Macs.
The move will save the liberal arts college more than $150,000 and the students and faculty will still be able to run Windoz.

Scott Byers, vice president for finance and the head of campus IT, also cited the additional security of Mac OS X, school wide access to Apple’s iLife suite, and Apple’s operating system itself as side benefits.

“It is, well, the superior OS, isn’t it?” said Byers, who before the switch was a dyed-in-the-wool Windowz user.
