SEO, Keyword Research, and Thematic Headings for Better Search Rankings
In yesterday’s post on getting SEO results from proper use of heading tags. Today l am going to show you how to choose the proper keywords and/or keyword phrases to use for you headings.
Since your headings should be thematic you will need a way to choose the keyword phrases other than throwing a dart at the wall.
Here is an example of thematic headings:

<h2>Choosing the Right Keywords for Your Website</h2>
<h3>Keyword Research will Make or Break your SEO</h3>
As you can see from the example the main topic of this page is “keywords bringing traffic to your web site”.
The sub topics are “choosing the right keywords” and “keyword research”.
You get the idea? Each of the headings relate to keywords and their use in bring traffic to your web site.
For more detailed information on how to choose and use heading tags please visit Heading Tags | SEO | Keyword Phrases.
How to Choose Your Keywords and Keyword Phrases
The first step in choosing your keywords and/or keyword phrases is to brainstorm any word/s you think might be applicable to your product and/or service.
When you have a list numbering 25 or more you are ready to begin the keyword research process.
You will want to take these words and phrases and group them into groups. You will wan to find like terms and related terms and put them together. You will want to have about 5 groups of 5 words each. Think of this abstractly as 5 pages of headings consisting of 5 topics each.
Keyword Research
You will need a keyword research and competitive analysis tool. There are plenty of them on the market today and many are free. The SEOBook Competitive Analysis and Keyword Research Tool is one of these. They are also available from Wordtracker, Google, Keyword Discovery and more. My keyword research tool of choice is Nichebot. Nichebot gives me a combination of all these tools at a very reasonable price and gets me the results I want extremely fast. You can try out Nichebot for $1 for 2 full weeks and see for your self.
(Post from Search Engine Optimizician.)
My keyword research process is as follows:
Enter each of the keywords or phrases into the search box:
![]()
This will give me up to 50 related results for the keyword or keyword phrase I have entered.
![]()
If any of the results happen to really be on target to my web site I can click on any of the results and dig deeper into that particular term.
I continue this until I have exhausted all of my groups. Nichebot allows you to save each of these searches into folders on the site so I don’t have to export or copy and paste anything until I have completed my keyword research.
If I don’t get the results for this step I am looking for Nichebot allow me to use any of the following quick-digging tools.
- Google Keywords Tool
- WordTracker Keywords Tool
- Keyword Discovery Keywords
- Yahoo! Related Digger
- WordTracker Thesaurus
- Quick Analyze
I take the results I have from the quick-digging tools and run some of the more relevant results through one or more of the deep-digging tools.
- 1-Click LSI Keywords
- WordTracker 4-in-1
- Google Keyword Cruncher
- SEMRush Total Espionage
- Keyword Xray
- Site Keyword Suggestion
- The Count Collector
- Typo Locator X
This isn’t all Nichebot has to offer. If you are interested in finding out more check them out here. I use Nichebot but any good keyword research tool will work just fine with my technique.
When I have all the results I need I can now re-assemble the keyword phrase groups into a more cohesive and progressive list that will actually contain the search terms people are actually using in the search engines.

Gary Pool
