Have You Seen a Google Logo You Just Loved and Hated to See Go? You Can Resurrect it!

greasemonkey Greasemonkey Scripts for Google Search and FirefoxIf you are running Firefox with Greasemonkey installed you can replace the logo on the Google homepage and search results page with your personal favorite “Google Doodle”.

This post was inspired by a articles by Barry Schwartz Liked That Special Google Logo? New Tool Lets You Make It Permanent and tiffanylane gmsearchscripts -Project Hosting on Google Code.

You must be using Firefox with Greasemonkey installed. You will need to go to the script source and install it. https://gmsearchscripts.googlecode.com/files/favoritedoodle.user.js One of the great things about Greasemonkey is that you will not even have to restart Firefox to use the script you just installed.

You can now go to http://www.google.com to check to see if every thing works. You will see the Lego logo.

When this works you can now find your favorite Google logo in the Google Doodle Gallery by clicking on the Lego Logo now being displayed or by right clicking on the little monkey in the status bar and selecting “User Script Commands” > “Favorite Doodle -> Choose favorite doodle” from the Greasemonkey menu.

Once you get to the Google Doodle Gallery you have a choice to make. You get a collection of the Google logos used in the past. This may take more time than the rest of the project unless you already know which logo you want. Just click on the “Make This My Favorite Doodle! button and viola, your choice will be displayed on the Google home page. You can change your mind and the doodle as often as you like.

Any guess which one I chose? Maybe my post Google Uses a Bomb for a Logo or is it a Warehouse 13 Reference might give you a hint. ;-)

The script allows you to either show your choice all the time even on holidays or if you don’t want to miss any of the classic Google holiday logos you just make sure that you don’t select “Favorite Doodle -> Always show my favorite doodle, even on holidays” if you happen to choose that all you have to do is select “Favorite Doodle -> Override my favorite doodle on holidays”.

So there you have it use your favorite Google logo to impress your friends. Just smile when they say “Why is your computer showing a different Google logo than mine.

Late,
Gary Pool
