SEO Basics: Text Navigation Links vs. Image Links
I ran into this article on the web this morning and I whole heartedly agree. White Rose Productions has been using text links styled with CSS for quite some time now.

This article refers to a detailed case study at WebMasteWorld Forums which is a pay-to-play forum. It requires a supscripting fee.

I would suggest you start using this technique also. Search engines count the text as more important to the content of a page than image descriptions. Now don’t stop using “alt tags” (image descriptions) they will help with your search engine ranking also.
